Location: Killamarsh, North East Derbyshire
Industry: Leisure Centre

The Killamarsh Community Centre, an ex-Parish Council owned building, was closed during the COVID-19 Pandemic, allowing its existing decrepit and neglect state to worsen. In 2021, North East Derbyshire District Council called upon Pulse Fitness, as its ongoing Strategic Leisure Development Partner, to support in negotiations to reobtain the building. With the expert support of Pulse Fitness, the property was reobtained, ready to be restored back into a community focused leisure centre.

In October 2022, Killamarsh Active officially reopened to members of the local community after 13 months of renovations.

THE SITUATION

After signing a 20-year leisure contract with North East Derbyshire District Council to oversee the planning, development and equipment supply of multiple leisure facilities within the local area, Pulse Fitness was tasked with upgrading the redundant community centre into a much-needed leisure centre.

Keen to introduce a multifunctional space that offered a number of leisure services under one roof, Pulse Fitness, alongside its partner Pulse Design & Build; a leading arm within the construction sector, carried out a £2million refurbishment project on a disused building which suffered from multiple structural and maintenance issues.

THE SOLUTION

The two-storey gym has been completely transformed into a modern fitness facility, with £300,000 of market-leading fitness equipment installed to deliver an 80-station premium workout space. A number of pieces from the Strength range include interactive console technology to deliver a fully connected fitness experience to users. The introduction of TRAKK, Pulse’s dedicated fitness app, enables members to digitally track and log their fitness progress and allows staff to monitor client activity and offer personalised advice.

In keeping with the request to make the centre a multi-functional space that offers a variety of activities, the Pulse Fitness team redesigned the 3G outdoor football pitch into multi-play sections with hopes to attract new members to the facility. The outdoor space was completed with updated fencing and finishing’s to ensure the centre’s new premium look and feel was reflected throughout.

The community centre was designed to be accessible and inclusive to all, so the Pulse Design & Build team developed a changing village complete with shower block, changing facilities and fully accessible amenities which incorporates a ceiling hoist.

THE RESULT

“We’re incredibly proud of our relationship with North East Derbyshire District Council. It’s been a pleasure to add Killamarsh Active to our Derbyshire portfolio and bring a much-needed Community Centre back to the area,” said a representative from Pulse Fitness. “We’ve been able to maximise each of our specialisms here to produce an end project that delivers on the main brief and outlined objectives. We hope the community enjoy exploring their brand-new centre and we look forward to working with North East Derbyshire District Council again in the future.”

“It’s always a delight to work with the team at Pulse. As a previous partner, we thoroughly trusted the redevelopment of Killamarsh Active in the hands of the Pulse team,” said North East Derbyshire District Council. “Their industry expertise has helped shape the entire project from initial design and planning to development and implementation and we’re delighted with the final completion. The re-opening of the centre has created a real buzz in the local community, offering local residents of all ages and backgrounds a place to meet and to develop healthy and fun lifestyles from the vast array of different activities we now offer.”
